Forest Certification Portal
The Canadian Sustainable Forestry Certification Coalition offers this certification search tool so customers can learn more about Canada's certified forests and identify suppliers who can offer quality certified forest products from Canada.
- Three globally recognized forest certification programs are used in Canada:
- the Canadian Standards Association's Sustainable Forest Management Standard (CSA)
- the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
- the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
- FPAC members are world leaders in third-party sustainable forest management certification. In January 2002, FPAC committed its members to achieving 3rd party certification to CSA, FSC, or SFI on lands under their management by December 2006. As of December 2005, FPAC members have achieved 95% of this commitment and given that they are responsible for over 70% of managed lands in Canada, this is a significant landmark.
- Two independent non-profit global programs - FSC and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications (PEFC) - provide assessment and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes. PEFC has endorsed the CSA and SFI forest certification standards, and FSC International has endorsed the FSC British Columbia Standard, the FSC Boreal Standard, and the FSC Maritimes Standard in Canada. Canada is responsible for almost 60% of PEFC certifications worldwide, and 25% of FSC certifications world-wide.
- Chain-of-custody certification provides a link between the certified forest and the certified product, offering support for product claims and labels. FSC has an international standard for chain-of-custody as does PEFC. To ensure international alignment, CSA and SFI have adopted chain-of-custody requirements that are based on the PEFC chain-of-custody standard (PEFC Annex 4). In addition to providing CSA, SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody audits, auditing firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG and QMI offer independent CoC certificates that can track a mix of certified fibre.
